Volvo Repair: Volvo 240 speedometer, electronic speedo, volvo 240

I have a 1989 240 wagon. Speedometer dead. But, odometer and trip counter work fine! In researching, I found "Speedometer Sending Units" for $100. How do I know if I even have one of those, or if it's the entire speedo that's bad? (I ruled out the cable cause the odo works).

well in 89, you have an electronic speedo, with only one pickup in the differential, hence no cable, so this indicates the sender is working. your speedo head has failed, and by Department of Transportation laws, it is NOT serviceable, all you can do is order a new one.
