Answer
Christy,
I'm sure you are aware that there are men that will take advantage of women who are buying cars, or having them worked on.  Be extrememly careful with this car, I own a 1991 BMW 525i, and it has never had the engine replaced, and it has 200k miles.
Why was the engine replaced? if it was neglegence, as someone let the car run hot, or someone didn't change oil, or someone just didn't put oil in the car, then chances are the rest of the car was neglected and will probably give you many EXPENSIVE headaches in the future.  BMW's are not like Chevy's where you can just jump in them and turn the key.  Maintainence HAS to be done to these cars, and if done on time... everytime, they will last for many years.  My 1984 325e has 350k+ miles, and it's still on it's original engine that has never been rebuilt.
I would keep your eyes open for other cars, as this one seems to be bad news waiting to happen.  Transmissions do not loose "memory" of anything.  They either work, or dont work.  Automatic transmissions are VERY expensive to have work done to them, and you dont want to replace anything in them.  If you are looking at buying a 1994 525i, I take it that you dont have a ton of money to spend on cars.  That's fine as I'm in the same boat.  If you cannot work on this car your self, you will be spending lots of money at shops who do questionable work.
So I will tell you this:  Find another car that has low mileage and is in better shape.  Preferably one that has never had engine work or transmission work.  A newer BMW is less likely to have problems and probably in better shape than the one you are thinking about buying.  If you cannot afford a better car, then you REALLY dont want to buy this one.  You will be spending the extra thousands in parts instead of a better car.  Like I said, BMW's are great cars, but you HAVE to take care of them.
If it were me, I would take what money I have and find the newest lowest mileage BMW I can.  If the engine was replaced... that throws a red flag to me.

Please dont hesitate to ask any other info.  If you could provide me with more info then I can tell you if it's a good deal.

 Take care, and good luck!
 Josh
