1989 735i
purchased 4 new tires
car  stering wheel vibrates when you drive over 40 mph was told it was the drive line and that we needed new u joints all universal joints need to be replaced.what do you think?
Answer -
If the wheel vibrates when over 40 AND when breaking then you possibly have bad rotor(s) and or brake pad(s) etc...

If the car is making a humming noise while the speed increases it could be your wheel bearing(s).

But if it is simply vibrating at all times when over 40mph, and not necissarily when braking... then I would think it would be more of an allignment issue expecially if the problem started happening after getting new tires.  I would go with the cheaper fix first. See how your allignment is and also check the power steering fluid level. (if your 735i came with that feature). IF both allignment and powersteering are okay then I would have to agree about the u-joints.

Hope that helps.

Answer
sounds like the brake sensor might be loose and tapping against the inside of the wheel well. Thats a shame that the steering wheel still vibrates with new rotors and all.. Only other thing I can think of is the allignment.  The sensor light should go of when New Sensors are installed. Check the wireing. did u replace both front and back sensors? Hope this helps. Sorry your still haveing trouble.
