BMW: Drive train noise on 1999 328i /81,000mi, bmw service manual, car warrenty

Question
Just purchased 1999 328i with sport option and 81,000 miles. Started noticing drive train noise (clunk) each time I shift the 5 speed transmission. Took car to BMW dealer where a young technitian ? went with me so I could demonstrate the noise. He then put car on rack to check further. I was not informed what he checked but told that there was no problem.

Later when I opened my new BMW service manual I found, under drive train trouble shooting, that any noise that showed up while shifting needed to be checked out. Sounds to me like too much slop in cv joint/s in drive train. seems to come from drive shaft. When I accellerate and decellerate in any one gear, I do not hear the noise. I only hear it when engaging and disengaging the clutch while shifting underway, or when car is stopped, by moving one of the rear wheels while that wheel is jacked up.

I feel I should take this car to another shop for a second opinion as my used car warrenty will expire in another month. Any comments?

Answer
there are some pretty annoying noises that come out of the E46 that you really cant get rid of. One of those happens to be a clunk when shifting. You can make it go away for a little while by lubing the splines on the driveshaft but in my experience it always comes back eventually. this is especially true with the GM automatic trans because the output shaft on the trans is sloppy. I dont really think it will hurt the vehicle i have heard a lot of them doing what you describe without seeing a single failure related to it.
