BMW: BMW 316i steering column, windhoek namibia, bmw 316i

Question
Dear Brian,

I own a 1993 BMW 316i that's had two previous owners (both ladies whom I know), and it's still in immaculate condition (only 55 000 kilos on the clock).

One problem though:  When turning the steering wheel a "squeeky" noise emminates from the steering column area at certain intervals.  One "expert" once briefly diagnosed the problem as being worn steering column (rod?) and that the sound actually emminates from "deeper within" although it sounds as if it comes from right behind the steering wheel.  My "expert" also said that one probably had to replace the "steering mechanism" (rod?) and that it would cost approx R14 000,00!!?  He also noted that its not absolutely neccessary to repair since there is no danger or risk involved leaving it like it is!?  My main problem is that the sound it makes everytime I turn the steering wheel drives me absolutely nuts! - although its not deafening and bare audible.

Your expert opinion please!

Regards

Answer
Abri-I cannot comment on the cost of the repair since you are in Namibia and I am in the USA.., but, your expert is pretty right on with his info. It sounds like the bearing and or bearing carrier within your column. It usually is not a simple replacement, and in US dollars figure 2-4 hours labor at around $65 each.
The sound is usually ridiculously bothersome, I know.
Break down, spend the money and get it replaced (the bearing or entire assembly)
Good luck!
Brian
