The air conditioning on my 1993 buick regal GS (3.8) stopped working after the winter. The clutch does not engage when turning the air on.  I checked the freon with a gauge and it says there is a problem wth the system.  The pressure seems very high.  It uses the 134a freon.
I would appreciate any help on trouble shooting this problem.

Thanks,
Mark

How did a gauge tell you that there is a problem with the system, especially when you said that it wont turn on?

I was going to recharge the air conditioning to see if that would resolve my problem.  But first I checked the amount of freon(134a) with a gauge.  On the gauge there is a red area that the documentation says indicates that there is a problem with the system.  But you may be right in that it never turned on so the reading may be inaccurate.

With the AC NOT on, the high and low side gauges should read the same and they should be about whatever the outside temp is. If they read lower than the outside temp, the system is low on refrigerant.
With the AC running, the low side should be about 20-30 psi depending on outside temp and humidity.
___________

What should I do next to determine where the problem lies?.

I dont know because you haven't given me any more info on what you have found so far.

If the clutch doesn't engage on the compressor what should do to troubleshoot it?

Answer
First you need to make sure that the system has enough of a charge to let the compressor turn on. If it does, then you need to check for power and ground to the compressor. if you dont have one or the other, start tracing it back to the relays, switches, fuses, ECM, wiring, etc.
