Buick/Olds: AC system 1991 Buick park Ave 3.8L, buick park ave, jumper wires

Question
the ac compressor will not come on.someone told me that i could take a jumper wire on the electrical plug on the high side line and that should make it come on.. but it did not. this person told me the compressor was bad. i bought a new compressor,i pulled the vaccum on the system and put 8 oz of oil in it,12 oz of 134 A and it would not take anymore and it still would not come on.i am not a mechanic, i was trying to save myself some money and ended up spending it. thank you for your time.

Answer
There is alot involved in the AC system on your car. First thing, if the system was low, the computer will not let the compressor turn on so that it doesn't get damaged. Also there is a sticker under the hood somewhere that tells how much R134A that the system needs to work properly. I dont know off hand how much it is but it is around 2 lbs. 12 ozs is not enough and 8 ozs of oil is way to much. You need to completely evacuate the system and vacuum down the system for at least 15 minutes at 30 inches of vacuum to remove all of the excess oil and moisture from the system. Then you need to charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant. By the way, your car should have had R12 not R134a in it. Has it been properly retrofitted to use R134a? After the system is properly charged you can begin to diagnose any other problems that you might be having, and just using jumper wires is not the way to diagnose it. Also remember that it may have a leak in the system that needs to be checked out. The most common leaks on your car are the evaporator core and the condenser.
Hope this helps you out a little. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
