Buick/Olds: Cam sensor magnet replacement, buick lasabre, timing chain replacement

Question
1989 Buick LaSabre 3.8L

Is there a place I can go on the internet that gives step by step instructions on the procedures for specific engines and repairs?. I enjoy doing my own work but would like a place to go that would be usefull when getting into these more complicated projects with the engine. I am going to replace the magnet on the camshaft and maybe the timing chain replacement procedure would be helpfull. Do you think this is ok for a shadetree mechanic to tackle? Is there any websites that you would recommend that would provide this type of (shop manual) procedure. A friend recommended I go to a library which may have "Mitchell on Demand" for reference. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can go to the library. Sometimes they have the factory service manuals there. You can use Mitchell, but I dont like it myself. There are to many errors and wrong proceedures. Chiltons or Alldata aree better if you cant find the factory manuals. I dont know of any step by step web sites, but I have never looked for any. If you are going to replace the cam sensor magnet, I strongly suggest that you replace the chain and gears while your in there. I dont know about your skill level but it is not a difficult repair. There are marks on the gears that you have to line up when reinstalling the chain. Thats about the only thing that you have to watch when you do it. Also the crank sensor will probably need to be adjusted when going back together.
Go ahead and give it a shot. If you get stuck you can always ask me for help.
Good luck
