Cadillac: Check oil light, oil pressure gauge, cadillac catera

Question
I have a 1998 Cadillac Catera.  The check oil light came on today, the oil pressure gauge was at zero.  When I shut the car off and checked the oil, the dipstick reads full.  I let the car sit for a while and when I started the car back up the oil pressure was back up, not near normal, but it was up.  It sounds like the oil isn't getting back to the oil pan when the car is running, but I am no mechanic.  Any insight into this situation would greatly be appreciated.

Answer
Could be just a faulty OIL PRESSURE SENSOR or it could be something more serious such as an oil pump failure.

I would NOT drive the vehicle and have it towed to your local aut repair facility where you have your work performed on this vehicle and they will put an external oil pressure gage on the engine to actually see how much oil pressure your engine actually has.

IF it is the oil pump and you try and drive it to your locaal repair facility you can DAMAGE the engine due to LOW oil pressure and it will most likely will require a NEW ENGINE.

Have it TOWED. The cost is usually covered under your insurance and is free if you have AAA or another towing company policy. Some repair shops will even tow it for free if you are one of their customers.
