Cadillac: 1987 Cadillac Sedan Deville Heater, phillips head screws, cadillac sedan deville

Question
I have a 1987 Cadillac Sedan Deville.  The front and rear defrost work OK, but the heat is not hot it's just slightly warm.  Also when I try the heater, it only blows at the feet, not through the top vents and it also is not very warm.  I have heard to check the thermostat or Heater Core.  Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Answer
Cadillac has had this problem since thr 80's.

OK, Remove the glove box liner via the 3 or 4 small phillips head screws and using a flashlight look up towards the inside of the windshield. There you will see a metal threaded rod attached to a plastic arm.

Start the car and go from extreme A/C to extreme heat and watch this metal rod and make sure it moves without skipping and or making any type of clicking noise in ONE direction for approx 2 or 3 inches of travel. Setting your controls to the A/C or heat should make the rod move in the opposite direction SMOOTHLY in about the same travel distance.

DOES IT ?.

The plastic arm that is closest to you comes out of the A/C-Heater PROGRAMMER.

Also if you remove the plastic under paneling below the glove box you will see at the bottom of the PROGRAMMER a rubber plug with about 6 or so different colored vacuum lines attached to this connector. In the center of this connector is a 7mm nut that you have to remove in order to remove the plug. Once removed and the engine running at normal operating temp you should have vacuum at the BLACK vacuum line.
