Cadillac: Used DeVilles - repair nightmares?, jd power ratings, bad rap

Question
Hi Tom -

I live in Western NY, where used Cadillacs are especially popular. I am puzzled that Consumer Reports is negative about used DeVilles -  almost all recent years are 'not recommended' - despite the fact that Cadillac has done well in recent JD Power ratings. Any idea what their beef is?

Answer
ABSOLUTELY. The problem is that there is just not enough SKILLED, KNOWLEDGEABLE automotive reapir facilities and a lot of dealer technicians who do NOT understand theis vehicles computer systems and they start replacing parts HOPING and GUESSING that eventually they will find the part that fixes the problem.

This GUESSING drives up the cost of the repair bill which infuriates the customer who in turn gives the Cadillac a bad rap of which it does NOT deserve.

As soon as they hear the words "COMPUTER(S)" they PANIC.

They will NOT take the time or make the EFFORT to learn the systems and start replacing part after part after part and if they still cannot resolve the problem their standard answeris :

IT'S A COMPUTER PROBLEM and ONLY the dealer has the equipment to FIX the computer.

This gives them an "OUT" so the owner will have to take it to the dealer and hopefully the dealer has a technician who can fix the problem.

It is NOT the fault of the vehicle. It is the fault of the person working on the vehicle.
