My car is a 1995. I started it and moved in from one side of the driveway to the other, now it won't start. There is no pressure at the fuel rail. I turned on the ignition and checked for voltage at the fuel pump, on the gas tank[should there be constant voltage there with key on?]and there was none. The fuse under the dash is ok and the fuel pump relay clicks.  Would you please give me some ideas?  My wife and I are both on social security disability [we only have one car]and can't afford to tow it to a garage. I have enough experience with cars to fix it if I can find the problem or where to look.. PLEASE HELP if you can.. Thank you freddie6755  kppfrd@aol.com......

When you FIRST turn the ignition switch to the ON position, WITHOUT STARTING the engine the electric fuel pump in the fuel tank will run for ONLY 2 SECONDS and then STOP. This 2 second run, Pressurizes the fuel rail.

Once the engine starts the computer provides a constant battery voltage to the fuel pump.

Here is a simple test to do:

1. You need 2 people.

2. Remove the gas cap and have someone listen for the buzzing sound of the fuel pump in the fuel tank.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY. Do NOT try and start the engine.

4. The person listening at the gas cap should hear the pump run for 2 seconds and then stop.

Does it ?.
no it does not buzz. Where should I look next?

Answer
Fred,

What you ASKED was: Should there be CONSTANT battery voltage to the fuel pump at ALL TIMES and I said ONLY when the engine is RUNNING is there constant battery voltage to the fuel pump.

Re-READ my test procedure.

Typical fuel pump failure. Replacement required.

NOTE: Check the fuse panel for a blown F/P fuse.

What MODEL is the vehicle ?.

Do you know where the fuel pump relay is located ?.

Fuel pumps are like a light bulb in your bathroom, They work when you don't really need one, But in the middle of the night, You turn it ON, and it blows out.
