Cadillac: EGR Valve 94 Cadi STS 32 v northstar, cadillac dealer, carbon buildup

My friend has a 1994 32 V Northstar Cadi STS. It began stalling at idle. It will start but then begins to surge and dies. Pulling hose and tapping the valve seems to clear it up temporarlily but the behaviour returns again. I believe the EGR is sticking open but we have not got the codes out yet. Is this a hard job to replace the valve ? Any other diagnostics we should run before attempting any repairs ?

Is the SERVICE SOON or SERVICE NOW light illuminated on the dash panel ?. If so, You need to extract the computer(s)codes.

Your problem MAY or may NOT be the EGR valve but a problem with the EGR CONTROLLER.

If you want to GUESS, Sure you can ORDER the EGR valve from any Cadillac Dealer but make sure that you obtain the STAMPED NUMBERS that appear on top of the EGR valve as you will need these numbers in order to ORDER a new valve.

You could also try cleaning the EGR pintle seat of the normal carbon buildup.

You might get lucky and ONLY require it to be cleaned.
