On my 1992 Sedan DeVille the check engine light soon will come on.  It will stay on till you shut the engine off.  Then the light goes off.  There is no pattern to when the light will come on and sometimes days go by before the light will come on.  What is the problem and what can I do about it?  Thanks
Answer -
Every time the CHECK ENGINE SOON light illuminates, It stores a CODE in the vehicles computer. You will need to have someone extract the code to see what the code # is and let me know.

The code was E52.    The service facility reset the computer.  Within a couple days the light came back on.  IU went back to the service facility and they again looked for a code but there was nothing stored.  Each time they checked the light was not on.  I am trying to coordinate bringing the car in when the light is on but usually it comes on at night on my way home from work and then when I start up again in the morning it does not come on.  On my bill from the service facility it has"Charts-PCM reset/Memory Loss-ok at this time-Reset Faults-Possible PCM or intermitant problem in memory circuit.  What do you think?
Thanks, Lee Ruslander

I agree with the service facility about their diagnostics.

Here is what you can do when the light illuminates. With the engine still running:

1. Locate on the CCP (A/C-Heater control panel) the "OFF" and "WARMER" buttons.

2. Push and hold BOTH "OFF" and "WARMER buttons simultaneously until ALL of the lights on the CCP illuminate and then release both of the above said buttons.

3. The display will go into the SEGMENT DISPLAY sequence and the CCP panel may go dark, This IS normal.

4. The display will go into DIAGNOSTICS and the CODES will start to appear.

5. Write down ALL of the code numbers that appear on the display.

6. AFTER all the codes finish displaying, Push the RESET button and the CCP panel will go back to it's normal operation.

7. Let me know what codes you get.

Today the service engine soon light came on.  I then conducted the test you set forth in your response.  I pressed the off and warm buttons at the same time.  Here is what happened.  The service vehicle light came on and the ECC started going thru it's checks.  The econ light blinked.  The auto light came on and off but not as much as the econ.  The outside temp light came on and off but not as much as the econ.  The Auto fan and Lo Fan came on.  I never saw any codes.  There were three blanks in the bottom of the screen but no numbers.  After about 10 minutes I pused the reset button.  Nothing happened.  I held the reset button in for 30 seconds and nothing happened.  In the fuel data display the numbers .7.0 appeared, but they had been there since the off and warmer buttons had been pushed.  I then rerstarted the car and the ECC went back to its original condition.  I then pushed the off and warmer buttons to try the test again.  This time both the Service engine soon and service vehicle soon lights came on and the ECC went thru its checking procedure.  Again no codes appeared and the data in the fuel display again read .7.0.  I pushed the reset and nothing happened.  O again turned car off and restarted and the display was normal again.  What does it all mean?
Thanks,  Lee Ruslander

You did it OK. Over the years they keep changing the commands and shutting off the ignition to return the CCP to it's original display panel is OK to do.

The E52 ONLY means that the ECM memory chip within the ECM has lost battery voltage. This could be due to an intermittent battery voltage input intermittent fault or a CAL-PAK intermittent fault of the computer CHIPS or an intermittent fault within the computer itself.

Have you had ANY work performed on the car, ANYWHERE prior to this problem ?.

About the ONLY fix is to take the time to check each and every connection at the computer terminals and make sure that the CHIPS are installed properly, As sometimes when ECM's are replaced these CHIPS are transferred to the NEW ECM and do not get installed properly.

Each time the CHECK ENGINE light(s) illuminate run the test that I gave you and see if any codes display.

If the E52 keeps turning on the CHECK ENGINE light(s) you can RESET the ECM to delete the E52 code to turn OFF the lights until the lights come back on again.

To CLEAR the codes:

1. Push and hold both OFF and WARMER buttons and as soon as it goes into the Status display and BEFORE it gets to the .7.0 display push and hold BOTH the OFF and HI buttons for 2 seconds and this will CLEAR the E52 code until next time.

When I push the off and warmer buttons simutaneously, Error Code E39 appears in the fuel data area before the .7.0 appears.  This is consistently happening when the check engine light soon comes on by itself or when I force it to come on by pushing the warm and off buttons at the same time.  I had beem looking in the wrong place for this code.  I had been looking at the ECC area but this code appears in the fuel data area.  Would this be the same code a service facility would get if I brought the car into them when the check engine soon light comes on?  What does this code mean and how can I correct the problem so that the check engine soon light does not come back on?
  Thanks again,  Lee Ruslander

Answer
You are correct, They switched the code displayment to the fuel data panel, So you are reading the EXACT same code as if it was performed by the GM service department.

They keep changing things from year to yaer and being retired it is hard to keep up with all the changes.

The diagnostic test for this problem is pretty simple but quite lengthy and it would be necessary for you to e-mail me at:

meperganfortis@msn.com

As I will need to e-mail you some pictures of which this board does NOT allow in order for you to perform the diagnostic tests.
