Cadillac: 1991 Deville air conditioning? 4.9L, e mail address, cadillac deville

Question
1991 Cadillac/ Deville/ 4.9L engine/ 80,000 miles/ purchased new.

Compressor growls/ makes a 'whirring' sound.....still cools the air.
Puzzle?...it growls with the ac on or off..!!?

Is it maybe just the pulley bearing?

We just replaced the original, with a reconditioned one, for the same noise, + it did quit cooling and the "check ac" light came on when you pushed 'auto'(auto would not stay on/ reverted back to 'econ')
I'm getting ready to replace the compressor again.

Any ideas or suggestions of things to do before, during, or after this operation?
Thanks much.....DeWayne

Answer
OH, DeWayne ,DeWayne , DeWayne, You replaced it with a reconditioned one.

1. WHY did you have to replace the original ?.

2. If you replaced it because it was SEIZED up there is most likely things you forgot to do which are:

1. Remove the original compressor.

2. Remove the orfice tube (expansion valve) from the system.

3. Did you FLUSH the entire A/C system witha flushing agent ?.

4. Did you replace the orfice tube ?.

5. Did you replace the receiver/dryer (accumulator) ?.

6. Did you install the correct amount of refrigerant oil ?.

7. Did you replace the correct amount of refrigerant ?.

8. Did you use a vacuum pump to extract all of the atmospheric air from the system after you put the system back together ?.

9. Did you check for leaks ?.

10. What are your high and low speed pressures according to the manifold set (A/C external gage set) ?.

I need to know the answers to the above questions.
