Cadillac: Rear Brake Pad replacement tips for 1995 caddillac sedan deville, drum brakes, greasy fingers

Question
I have replaced the rear pads on the car, and I am now experiencing surging when I apply the brakes. I have repeatidly bled the system, and it doesn't help. Have I missed something? Can you help.

Answer
Hmm... I haven't hear the word surging in a while.  Do you mean it kind of feels like the rear brakes are OVER braking?

If so there is not much you could have done if they are disk brakes to mess it up.  Installation is straightforward.
I have heard that if you put your finger on the pad surface it can, depending on the pad, mess it up and cause it to wear in a strange way.  If you got greasy fingers on the pad that might has something to do with that but that usually affects drum brakes and not disks.  Disks with grease usually just don't brake.  The only thing I could figure is that the pressure equalizers were removed if the car has any but then that would have required modification to elongate the hoses to meet the master cylinder, but I doubt you did that.

Were you sure the piston was pushed all the way in before installing the pads?  Does the parking brake work well?
I'm thinking your problem might be related to the parking brake and maybe somehow there was something you had to do to get the ratcheting system of the parking brake to go back to normal.
I honestly don't know, the only time I've experienced something like that was on drum brakes but that was because they were very old and needed a resurfacing, but the surging would go away after they heated up.

I would seek the advice of someone more experienced in brakes.
I've changed many rotors pads, shoes drums, and master cylinders in several years but I have never experienced that problem exactly.
