Chevrolet: My 90 camaro starts and runs but dies out if the gas is not pushed to the right amount, timing light, gear set

Question
I would like to know whats wrong with this, The person i bought it from said it was the fuel pump but im not sure it is because it looks like its getting enough gas and flames are coming out. I dont know if this is a common problem.

Answer
Matt,
You need to check your timing. If you have flames shooting out, it is because the motor is firing while the valve is still open. This can cause all kinds of problems, and needs to be addressed right away. Put a timing light on it and set your timing to 10-12 degrees before top dead center and you can fine-tune it from there. If your timing is way off, you might have jumped a tooth or something, and it will need a new timing chain/gear set. Good Luck!
