Chevrolet: engine identification, engine id, barrel carburetor

Question
I recently purchased a 1954 chevy 6500 school bus converted into a camper. I was told the engine which I believe is not original is either a 283 or 327. The only engine number I have been able to ocate is stamped on the passenger side front by the water pump. The number is F0922D. The engine has a single barrel carburetor.

Answer
Larry,
I believe what you have there is the engine ID code, which reads F=Flint Motor, 09=September, 22=Day, the engine stamping number should be on the back of the block by the distributor, to the left. it should be a 6 or 7 digit number. Check the back of the motor and see if you can come up with any numbers, or if you can get a number off of the intake I might be able to ID it that way. I always like to try to ID motors, because sometimes you find a rare one or an unusual one in the oddest spots. Let me know what you come up with.
