Chevrolet: maf sensor code P0171, chevy venture, pep boys

Question
QUESTION: I have 1999 chevy venture with a scanner reading- P0171 system too lean bank 1 code.  How can I test it and make sure it is the MAF sensor and can I try cleaning it or should I just replace it?

ANSWER: The MAF sensor should be replaced. It is a fairly easy fix and relatively inexpensive. If you are running too lean on one bank, it is more than likely the MAF. I would just replace it and be done with it rather than trying to monkey around with the old one. I have never heard of one being cleaned with any effectiveness.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Just to let you know.  It was the MAF.  I found web info on cleaned sensors saying that most of the time they just need cleaning.  I went to Pep Boys and bought some spray and cleaned it up. Upon starting check engine light was off and the vans idle was smooth.  Thanks for responding and take care.

Answer
Jim, That's great... I can say now that I have heard of one cleaned that worked... I appreciate the follow up, as well. I usually replace them, but if they can be cleaned I would definitely advocate for that, as I am always looking for new info and new ways to do things that save money as well. What kind of cleaner did you use? Maybe you could tell me what web sites you visited? Thanks.
