Chevrolet: 305 c.i, dipstick, oil pan

Question
I have a 1978 305, why does the dipstick go through the oil pan instead of the block, and could i put the dipstick back through the block, even if it has rod in place where it would go through the block

Answer
Mat, well the oil p.s.i. and water pressure is one reason, the tube might bend or leak, I bet it was thought of a long time ago. so it is in the pan  so I guess that is where it will stay. ok p.s. some go in from the pan and some go into  the motor from the l/side of the block.you worded it like you want to drill a hole.
