Chevrolet: 68 Impala generator light, 68 impala, generator light

I turn off the ignition and the light stays on.,But it goes off when the engine is running.

Hi- do you mean when the key is out that the light is still on,. or it is on when the key is in  and not running. if it is out when running it should be fine, but I would have it checked with a volt meter to see what voltage it is putting out and to see what the battery is charging at.
