Chevrolet: 98 Cavalier wont start, mechanical knowledge, timing chain

Question
Last night my son drove my 98 Cavalier home in the rain and through water about 10" deep.  This morning when I got ready to leave it wouldn't start.  It sounds like it is trying to start and I can hear the fuel pump running.  My late husband was a mechanic and I have lots of tools, and a couple of son's with just enough mechanical knowledge to be dangerous.  Can you tell me where to start?  The engine almost sounds like a problem with the timing chain, but I don't know if it even has one.  It is a 2.2L with a standard transmission.  It only has 120,000 miles on it.  Last month the factory alarm started having problems so I had it removed, could that have caused problems? I'd appreciate any ideas

Answer
Nina;
Hi 120,000 is  a bit of miles , have you
looked to see if the belt broke ? and I bet that the ing. is all wet inside of the cap moisture and that will keep it from starting ,so if you can remove the cap and dry it off or let it air out  than try it.  ok
