Chevrolet: 87 Chev S-10 p/u used tranny, gear oil, 5th gear

Question
I'm hoping you can help me even though it's an 87. We have an 87 Chev S-10 p/u, Manual, 2.8 littler, non 4x4, 6 cylinder, over 200K miles. Ran great for years.

It locked up in 5th gear on the highway last month. Starting it was noisy and produced knocking sounds.

We found used trannys between $150-500. We secured the $150, cleaned it up, bought a new pilot bushing, and reused our own bell and everything else. Cleaned all the parts up before putting it back together.

NOW: 1) Tranny won't engage while engine is on. 2) Can't go in Reverse at all.

Need to get it started and pass emmissions. Thanks! :)

H - did you take the cover off the tranny and look inside it. it sounds as if it could be bad . did you also put new gear oil in the tranny. and if the clutch is worn or not adj. right it would do the same thing. I would check the tranny and I would have tried it by hand to check if it would shift and turn prior to putting it in. also fill it with new gear oil.
