Chevrolet: HEI ignition not cranking, chev 350, bright headlights

Question
Hi Roger,
I have a '66 Buick Special that I purchased a couple of months ago. The guy before me swapped in a '74 Chev 350/TH350 out of a 2WD pickup.
A couple of times the car has not wanted to turn over. I've popped the hood done the customary wire wiggle, and she starts up.
Yesterday I drove her for 30-40 miles parked it in the driveway and when I went to start her several hours later the non-cranking issue happened again and nothing seemed to rectify it.
I did find that two of the wires to the alt. were in very bad shape and re did the connections. I also have bright headlights and they do not dim when the key is turned. There is no silenoid click or other sounds when the key is turned. I replaced all the fuse panel fuses. I also disconnected the ignition wire at the distributor and reconnected it.
What am I missing? I know it has to be something simple.

Thanks for your time!
Greg

Answer
Gregg;
  I wonder - how is the starter motor ? I would check all wires and the fuseable link if you have one and check the batt. terms. to see if they are clean and tight.  start from the battery out to the starter and ing. there is a break someplace ok. it might be a simple thing - you just have to find the dam thing.   ok do you get spark to the plugs ? or nothing at all when it happens. ?
