When I start, the car in the colder weather there is a ticking sound coming from the engine and it slowly goes away as the car warms up. Lately it is taking longer for the noise to go away and it only ticks when the car is in drive.

In addition, my engine power is lacking going up hills and accelerating on the highway. The Chevy dealer did an engine flush for carbon and that improved the cars performance for about 6 months. Not sure if this is still the problem.

The 1998 Tahoe has 112,000 miles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gary;
       well first off the engine has 112,000 miles on it so for the loss of pep is not un common , but as far as the ticking that must be the valve tappets and in the cold the oil takes longer to get up and on them to quiet them down , a oil change with some new  oil might help a bit.
And as far as the engine if you put in some new spark plugs
if thay have not been changed,   might help you. and have you treid a differnt brand of gas .

----
Thank you

The car has had the oil change every 3000 to 4000 miles since it's been new and a tune up with new spark plugs within the past 17,000 miles. I have gone to different brands of gas off and on but may need to stick with a new brand. I have a few friends with Tahoe's with higher miles and they are not having these problems. Is carbon a problem here in the sluggish engine that a flush will take care of? or did the Chevy dealer take me for a ride? To fix the tappets do I have to over haul the engine. I am looking to keep it for 16 to 20 more months. The car is in great condition and if I can fix these issues it would be great - Any other thoughts would be help on the direction I should take. To hold off on getting a new car.

Thanks

Answer
Gary;
    Well carbon can build up and cause some troubles , as far as you getting it done ,  I do not know what thay did to it and what it cost but the real way would be is to get a valve job , and that is not cheep. and you could try a hotter spark plug and see if that helps it.
