Roger I have a delema,
we have an 89 beretta 4 cylinder. 3 years ago my mother was driving the car and it died. The car sat for a year before I returned to the area and began to trouble shoot the problem. SYMPTOMS: will start in cold weather but has no choke, idles low around 800RPM when cold, stalls and dies until the car is ran for around 20 minutes or the MAP is unhooked "ie" closed loop. WHAT WE HAVE CHANGED: ICM, Coil Packs, TPS, MAP, IAC Valve, Coolant Temp Sensor, O2 sensor, Injector,Fuel Pump and Filter, plugs and wires. Also when the MAP is unhooked the car idles at 1500 and drops to normal after a few seconds but the stmptom does not go away until the car is driven for around 20 minutes at freeway speed and then intermitenly resumes. The exhaust smells rich and will burn your eyes if you bend down to smell the fumes. Its as if the car is flooding out or running real rich. After the car is ran for 20 minutes it has all the power in the world then will suddenly start acting up forceing you to pump the throttle to keep the car up to speed. I have taken it to a dealer and they worked on it for a week and found no codes. The odd thing is if you let off the throttle "pumping action" it squirts fuel down the throttle body but if you open the throttle "floor it", no gas goes down the throttle body. I have not given up on the car but am running out of things to change with the process of elimination. Damn idiots put computers in cars. The good old days of spark, fuel, timing and compression are long gone. If you have any ideas please lend me your insight. Thanks, Sean Davenport

HI SEAN;
        IT SOUNDS  LIKE A FUEL CONDITION FOR SURE. ARE THERE ANY LEAKS OR WET FUEL ANYPLACE. I WOULD SEE WHAT TYPE OF PSI THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS PUTTING OUT, ALSO CHECK THE VACUME. DOES IT HAVE A EGR VALVE , HOW IS IT. THE THROTTLE BODY COULD BE BAD TOO.I WOULD LOOK AT THE FUEL SYSTEM REAL GOOD IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS IN THE THROTTLE OR FUEL FLOW.

         Roger, Could it be that the TPS was noe instlled correctly; meaning I have now heard that I need to disconnect the battery and install the TPS and turn it 1/4 turn then tighten it and reconnect the battery? Have you heard of this before? THnaks for your quick response, Sean

Answer
Hi
  You can try it , There are a lot of things now that must be re-set and it is a pain when things such as what you have going on happen ,even when a new battery is replaced on some cars the computer must be re-programed , crazy but true.  you can try it and disconnect the battery first.
