Chevrolet: Cavalier oil light/start up problems, oil light, steering wheel

Question
I've been having a couple of problems recently with my 1997 Cavalier.

1.  Most of the time, the car does not start on the first try, the key simply turns all of the way without any noises, turning of the engine.  Sometimes, it take 4 or more tries to get the car to start, other times it starts right up.  Once, the car turned over, but would not start & the oil & battery lights came on.  Car has started since.

2. Since the above problem, when I come to a stop, the oil light comes on, then goes away as soon as I step on the gas.  I had the oil changed about a month ago.  Added 2 qts of 10-40W myself, and now the level is good (once, I added it when the car was hot...maybe a bad idea).

Not sure if these problems are related.  I have had work on the electrical and starter done in the past 18 months.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi brooke, I think that the first problem is simple to fix. The probled is the ignition switch inside the steering columb, its a common problem with cavaliers. I think you could even change it yourself, just remove the screws below the steering wheel to remove the cover and the switch is on the left side with two screws in it, just unplug it take out the screws put the new one on and plug it in put the cover back on and your done. As for the second problem, fix the first one first to see if it the cause of the second problem. I hope this helps you if you need more help just let me know. Regards, Keith.
