Chevrolet: help i love this car, wooha, auto tranny

i have a 1981 el camino 3.8 liter 350  tranny. i thought my tranny went out on me when it would not go into any gear so i replced it and still nothing there is a clanking noise coming from the engine what could it be

 When you say clanking is it running when it makes the sounds ? if you put in a new tranny and it will not go,and you hear clnaking sounds, dam I think you did some damage to the drive train -if the motor dont run and it clanks when you try to start it I wonder if it is a rod ! and thats real BAD.  is the spline shot or the flywheel.??
it is a auto  tranny right . hea is the noise comming when you put it in gear, as it could be the rear also . can you tell me a bit more .
