Dodge: rear main seal, pan gasket, torque wrench

Question
-------------------------

I thought too that it might be the oil pan gasket. Changed it twice, still leaks. I did not torque the oil pan bolts at all, tightened them the normal way. Could not see any leakage from the oil pan at all. It was the rear main seal bolts that i tightened so much. So now what do you think?  Thanks

I have a 77 dodge 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive. 318 motor. The rear main seal is a 2 piece, had the rope seal in it, replaced it with new rubber seal. Still leaks oil. Have checked the oil pan gasket and that is not the problem as far as I can tell. When the motor sits and idles... no oil leaking... when revved up, it leaks some, not real bad but enough to be fixed. Was told torque on the bolts were about 90 lbs. Didnt have torque wrench, used a breaker bar with short pipe, got as tight as I could. May have tightened too much? The seal itself fit snug and seemed to be the correct one. Please help,  Thanks

Its probally not the rear main seal but the oil pan gasket. You should never torque the bolts, they reccommend it but they dont, stop and think that it will wreck the gasket. Sounds like the oil pan will need to be dropped again,, and replaced..

Answer
Looks like the pan will have to be removed, and the rear main seal changed again. What could of happened, was when you used to much torque on the rear main seal, you could of smashed the seal, or you could of installed it wrong, then torqued it. Your going to have to start all over again.. Ty
