Ford: 1989 Bronco 5 speed manual transmission, shift fork, shifter boot

Question
QUESTION: I have an 1989 Bronco with a 5 speed manual and 4.9 6 cyl engine.  The clutch has less than 5,000 miles.  It has become very hard to get into reverse and fifth gear sometime.  1,2,3 and 4 work ok.  I don't know how many miles the truck has.  It has the mazda transmission.  The fluid level is good.  It uses auto tran fluid.

Would Royal Purple fluid help?  Also how much does the transmission weigh?

Thank you,
Jim Wall

ANSWER: Royal purple wont really help a whole lot in this case, it is an excellent high temp transmission fluid, but you most likely have an internal problem. possible a shift fork bushing. the transmission weight is around 200-250 lbs. if memory serves.

QUESTION: Will the transmission have to be removed to repair this?v3iit

Answer
possibly, first pull the shifter boot cover off, and remove the place securing the shift lever to the transmission, check the bushing in the top of the transmission, if they are good that yes, you are going to have to pull the transmission (refer to a shop manual on how to do this) if they are flat, replace them and try again.
