Ford: 1997 F250 coolant leak, heater coils, coolant leak

Question
Randy:
I have a 97 F250 with 91000 miles on it and I have noticed a coolant leak dripping from under the firewall area. My past experience with heater coils was that they would leak inside of the cab. Could this be something other than the coil? I cut the heater hoses and connected them together therefore isolating the heater coil and stopped the leak. However, I'm still not convinced that it is the coil or possibly the hose itself. Prior to cutting the hoses, I did get a smell inside of the cab like burnt coolant and smoke coming from the heater vents. If I have to replace the coil, is there any instructions out there on how to remove the dash and what pitfalls to look for.
Thanks in advance for you response.

Answer
Wayne, it sounds like you have it narrowed down there.  Like you said with the hose, that may be possible.  You could try checking the clamps.  I know with some of those squeeze clamps, they can loose their strength and start leaking, then you have to put one of those worm gear clamps on it.  Other than that, as far as replacing the heater core, the best advise I can give you on that is purchase a manual from an auto parts store and just go step by step.  When I replaced the heater core in my wifes ford contour, I had to do the same thing.  Let me know if you have anymore questions.  I will do what I can for you.
