Ford: 1990 f250, forward acceleration, torque convertor

Question
QUESTION: A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO I WAS LEAVEING A STOP LIGHT AND MY TRUCK FELT LIKE IT LOST POWER OR TORQUE NOT SURE WHICH. WE CHECKED EVERYTHING ON THE ENGINE REPLACED A BUNCHED OF PARTS, AND NOTHING HELPED.A FREIND TOLD ME THAT THE TRANNY NEEDED TO BE REBUILT, SO WE PULLED THE TRANNY OUT, REBUILT IT STILL NOTHING. WE FORGOT TO CHANGE THE TORQUE CONVERTER. IN THE MORNING WHEN ITS COLD IT FEELS LIKE ITS SLIPPING REALLY BAD UNTIL IT WARMS UP, THEN IT JUST FEELS LIKE THE BRAKE IS BEING APPLIED. WE DID A COMPLEATE BRAKE JOB THINKING THE BREAKS WERE HANGING UP STILL NOTHING. COULD THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAVE GONE BAD. I HAVE ONLY HAD THE TRUCK FOR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR NOW. THE TRUCK HAD BEEN SITING FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS. PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHAT COULD BE GOING ON.

ANSWER: Hello,

To get clear:

a couple of months ago truck slowed or wouldn't go even though rpm stayed up.

transmission rebuilt

now engine revs high, but truck doesn't respond, then rpm and vehicle speed seem better, but still sluggish.

Is that accurate?

What codes are available from ECM?

How does the engine rev in neutral/ park?

When you get truck going 50 MPH and slip it into Neutral on a flat or slight down hill grade, does truck slow down? or speed up?

Is it 4X4?

What is fuel pressure?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: tranny doesnt slip when warm just cold and its not like is slippin just feels like its dragging . fuel pressure is fine had its checked. it is 4x4 has a rebuilt transfers case in it.at 50 in neutral it cost just fine no draging till you put it back in gear. truck goes just fine just feels like it draging in the tranny or torque converter. feels like someones pushing on the brakes.

ANSWER: Hi again,

Thank you.

Because it only drags in gear, we can safley rule out brakes and driveline.

Beacause it drags on forward acceleration, we can rule out torque convertor.

A damaged convertor, where the vanes have flattened, can cause slippage, but that's it.  It would allow the engine to rev abnormally high until vehicle got momentum, and this would happen at every stop.

A damaged lock-up portion of the convertor, would cause vehicle to either, never lock up at higher speeds, or cause the vehicle to stall at lower speeds and stops.

I would have to say that the problem is in the transmission.
As though you were in 2 gears at once.

What codes are you getting??

When you rebuilt it, were the sun gears and carriers examined closely?  Were the electronics checked for updates?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: there are no codes showing up. the internals of the tranny were inspected by a tranny shop. they said every thing was good and sold us the parts we needed. i had a local tranny shop tell me the same thing about the two gears at once thing what would cause that. thanks for helping me out.

Answer
Hi,  Unfortunately, you will have to find a transmission shop to take it to.. Most good/ graet shops will test drive it and give you a good idea of what to expect from that.. mostly at no charge, but ask first.

What about the shop thast reeviewed the parts?  at least they have seen the insides already.
