Ford: humming noise, wheel bearings, wheel bearing

Question
when my 2003 ford ranger extended cab 4x4 hits about 30 miles an hour i get a major humming noise. i replaced the tires and got an alignment and it still makes noise. sounds like a tire. when i turn right it stops would you have any idea of what it is. i am wondering if its the bearings in the front. there is only 65,000 kms on the truck

Answer
Well Mike I think you are on the right track. I belive it sounds like a wheel bearing as well. Id say more likely the left one. To check your wheel bearings lift the front tires and shake kinda at 2 and 7. And if there is any movement then that is the play in the bearing. Make sure there are no other loose front end components though. These things should have been checked when the alignment was done but things can get overlooked. also please check that neither one of the front hubs that lock the front axles are locked in place because that can give you a vibration or a hum as well. Hope this gives you a starting point.

Jim
