Ford: 1984 Lincoln town car - kicking and bucking, lincoln town car, fuel injection system

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1984 Lincoln Town Car with a 302. Sometimes when driving at a steady speed the car will start bucking and jerking. If I push my foot down on the gas it will usually quit but when I go back to a constant speed the condition sometimes returns. I'm sure the problem is one of the sensors related to the fuel injection system. I replaced the engine about a year ago with one from a salvage yard so I have the old one with all the sensors. I thought about swapping them out until the problem went away. Just hoping you might be able to give me some idea which sensor is the most likely to cause this problem.
Thanks,
Brian Wolfe
ANSWER: Brian, the first part I would replace is the ignition coil.  The symptoms that you are talking about are typically coil related. The ignition coil will cost you about 15 dollars, or you might try the one on the old engine.  Good luck,   Jason

QUESTION: I replaced the coil and that seemed to help a little but did not totally solve the problem. Any ideas on where to go next?

Answer
Brian, I would next give it a tune up and change the fuel filter.  The fuel filter will probably be in the carburetor where the fuel line attaches to the carb.  If you have already given it a tune up, then start the car at night with the hood up and look for any of the wires to be sparking across the manifold.  You might have just got a bad set of wires.  The only other thing I can tell you is to clean up the carb.  If it does it at idle, then spray some carb cleaner while it is idling at missing and see if that helps.  You might also mix a bottle of Heet and a quart of paint thinner into a full tank of gas.  You might just have a lot of water built up in the fuel tank.  Good luck,   Jason
