Ford: 1981 ford f 150, ford f 150, carborator

Question
Hi I am looking into purchasing a 1981 ford f 150 stepside pickup.  However the seller has informed me that he needs to replace the carborator every few monmths and doesnt know why.  Its a straight six manual 4.9 liter engine with 45,000 mile on it it was in a minor accident and the front end needs to be moved over I am not sure if that could affect it.  also the truck has about 300,000 miles on the body is a 4x2 from factory and a four inch lift.  I dont know if that affects anything but mainly I want to know if there  is a way to fix the carborator and what the problem might be
thanks Mike

Answer
Mike,

The accident that involved the front end should not affect the carburetor. Needing to replace the carburetor as often as you are saying does not make sense. You can get a good rebuilt carb for about 150 bucks. It sounds as though the carbs are either A)not being rebuilt correctly or B) not being installed correctly.  I would be very leary about buying a vehicle in which a front end needs to be moved after being involved in an accident because you may be setting your self up to have to replace tires every 100 miles (especially if the front end/frame is bent). Hope that this helps and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck.
