Ford: valve adjustment ford 177ci 2.9v6, valve lifter, adjustment screw


Question
I OWN A 1987 RORD RANGER W/2.9ENGINE 4X4.I'VE HAD SOME VALVE LIFTER NOISE FROM MY PASSENGER SIDE OFTHE ENGINE. I DECIDE TO CHECK MY VALE ADJUSTMENT WHEN REPLACING THE VALVE COVER GASKETS.MY HAINES MANUEL FOR 1987 FORD RANGER SAYS TO BRING NO.1 PISTON TO TOP DEAD CENTER AND ADJUST ROCKERARM TO JUST TOUCH VALVE STEM, THEN TURN 1-1/4 TURNS IN.THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT,BECAUSE IT IS OPENING THE VALVE WHEN TURNING IN THE 1-1/4. SOMEWHERE I HEARD ONLY 1/4 TURN, SO I ADJUSTED THE VALVES TO THAT SUGGESTION.THIS WAS AFTER I BROUGHT EACH PISTON UP TO TOP DEAD CENTER,BACKED OFF THEN MADE CONTACT TO STEM THEN 1/4 TURN. I NOW HAVE MORE VALVE CHATTER THEN BEFORE. I CANT SEEM TO FIND THE CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR MY ENGINE WITH HYD. LIFTERS.EACH ROCKERARM HAS AN ADJUSTMENT SCREW LIKE SOLID LIFTERS.THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REBUILT AND HAS ABOUT 80K.ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHERE I CAN GET THE CORRECT INFO. THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP.

tom just do this the old school way with the valve cover off on the side you are adj. start it up turn it till it stop chattering then turn it 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn and you are done.its a pain in the ass but it always works and old man show me this and it works . he told me ot take the book and stick  it.    good luck
