Ford: 1999 Ranger Engine Stalling and Smell, back of the cab, scaned

Question
Hello, I hope you can help. During the last 3 months or so, my 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0L w/auto has acted up 8 or 10 times. Sometimes after it has set overnite or a long day without running, it will start and run/drive fine for about 15 minutes. Then it will begin losing power. If I press down on the accelerator, the engine will get louder but will keep losing power and speed. I will then stop on the side of the road. When I do this, I can smell a hot metal smell coming from under the truck and into the cab. After stoppping or sometimes just slowing way down, the engine will pick back up and not have anymore problems. It may not do this again for a week or 2 and then suddenly will do it again. It does seem that it will definitely stall if I start out driving and make no stops (red light or stop signs). But if I stop and go, the problem doesn't occur. I have smelled the trans fluid when I first pull over and it smells fine. I think the burning smell may be the catalytic converter as it smells like really hot metal. But if the converter were stopped up, wouldn't this be a constant problem? Thanks very much for your advice, Jason
