Ford: Ranger pickup, starts when it wants to, ford ranger pickup, ford ranger

Question
My son has a 1994 ford ranger pickup truck.Four cyl. engine. He lives in Arizona.Lately he will attempt to start it. Turn the key ,engine turns over will not start. Goes out a while later, starts right up when the key is turned.Does not stall when driving, but has had it run like it is starving for gas. Could it be the fuel pump ? Filters ? Has happened a few times over the last few months.Any help is appreciated. He has a new family .Not a lot of money.I am not there to help. I'm in Wisconsin.Hoping it is something he can repair.
Thanks,Larry Matuszewski

Answer
Larry the next time this happens what i want you to do is have him with out starting the vehicle up is cycle the key to the on position wait 5 sec and do this 5 X  then try to start it if it does start then the fuel pump is going bad.  let me know .
