Ford Mustang: engine light, distributer cap, engine compartment

i hosed my engine down and when i went to drive it the engine light came on(sometimes flashing) and its riding rough and sputtering.what is the problem?

I always worry that that will happen to my car if I spray the engine compartment. You may have gotten water under the distributer or somewhere in the engine where it is interfering with a connection. Take a hair dryer to the engine compartment and see if that helps. Tighten all connections to make sure hoses and such have not been worked loose. You did`nt say what year your car was but it`s most likely water under the distributer cap (for an older car). Make sure it`s dry inside.
