GM-GMC: GMC Tailgate with spray in liner, half the time, bezel

How do you get the bezel off?  The one that is easy to break.  I can get the three bolts out, and pulling the handle forward and using a brake tool I can get the cable back into the hole.  Put bolts back in, opened tailgate, once the tailgate goes down the rod falls back out of hole!  So there must be a clip that goes on the back of the rod but there is no room to get behind it at any time and I do not think just removing the bezel will allow me to get behind it let alone find the clip or whatever is on the other side.

There are small clips that retain the rods.  They will often break.  You should be able to get replacements from your local dealer.  However, in order to install them you will likely need to remove the bezel around the handle.  They are extremely difficult to get off without breaking them.  I would say more than half the time the tabs break even if you are as gentle as possible.  I have siliconed many of them back in place with no problems.  So you may have to do that if you break it.
