GM-GMC: 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, 2003 chevy trailblazer, windshield wiper switch


Question
Wipers run intermittently to constantly with out being "on".   Please advise how to repair, and what tools would be required.

Answer
This problem is potentially very difficult to diagnose, here is the diagnostic chart

If you have trouble with any of the steps in the process, let me know and I will try to help you through it.


Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch OFF.
Turn ON the ignition.
Are the windshield wipers always on?
If Yes Go to Step 3
If No Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Disconnect the steering column harness connector.
Remove the connector terminal row E from the steering column connector half.
Connect the steering column harness connector.
Turn ON the ignition.
Are the windshield wipers always on?
yes Go to Step 4
No Go to Step 6

Test the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
yes Go to Step 10
no Go to Step 5

Test the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
yes Go to Step 10
no Go to Step 9

Test the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit in the steering column harness for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
yes Go to Step 10
no Go to Step 7

Test the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit in the steering column harness for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
yes Go to Step 10
no Go to Step 8

Replace the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

Is the repair complete?
yes Go to Step 10

Replace the windshield wiper motor cover. Refer to Wiper Motor Cover Replacement .

Is the repair complete?
yes Go to Step 10

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
