GM-GMC: 83 Sierra Classic Radio Wiring, yellow wires, radio wiring

I am trying to install a kenwood stereo system in my buddy's sierra classic, 6.2l diesel. i have the ground, speakers, the yellow wires, and the red fro mthe stereo to the gray of the truck. when the power is kicked on the unit makes a noise, as if something was powering up, but the display doesnt light up. ive checked the fuses, nothing blown, and the screen lit up for a second the first time, now theres nothing, please help me.

I am struggling a bit to understand what is happening here.  You will need to find some wiring...A constant 12v source (prefereably fused), an ignition 12v source (12v with key on, 0v with key off), an illumination wire (12v when lights on, 0v with lights off, (similar to the gauges), a ground and all your speaker connections.
The Radio should come with a wiring diagram, or occaisionally they are on a sticker on the deck.  Match up the wires accordingly.  Some decks will combine the illumination wires and the ignition wires so the deck is illumated at all times, some don't.  Hope this helps you a little.  I don't have any wiring diagrams for a vehicle of that year.  Get your test light out!
