GM-GMC: S-10 pinion gear replacement, pinion depth, broken teeth

Question
I need to replace the pinion gear in the rear end (broken teeth).  Got it out, but having trouble getting the outside bearing pressed on.  What is your suggestion? Thanks

Answer
the best way is always have it pressed on by s machine shop (ie Pats drive line or The gear centre). these kind of shops have the right tools for the job. that being said, if you don't have access to a press here's a little trick you can try. Take the bearing and heat it on a hot plate, until it's hot,(not red hot).  Take the pinion and cool it in the freezer.  Then put the bearing on the pinion and tap it down with a thin punch on the inner race. do this quickly without damaging the bearing.  Don't forget to install the same shim if there was one behind the old bearing or your pinion depth will really be out.
