GM-GMC: turn signal arm, gm trucks, diameter wire

Question
Hi Harry, On my (1989 GMC S-15 2wd p/u ), the turn signal/washer/cruise control switch is broken and now cruise control won't work unless the wipers are on.

OK I know it has to be replaced........ I had the steering wheel off today, then the plastic dust cap, then my mind went blank.

QUESTION: how do I get the old arm off to replace it ? I know from shopping got a new arm that it has a long cable that I assume plugs in somewhere under the dash for the cruise and washer.

Any help wound be appriciated

Answer
Ken,

You will need to look at the replacement as some arms have a bayonet attachment and some screw into place.  I have not worked on an S-10/S-15 and I am basing my advice on the full size GM trucks of the early 1980s.

The cable probably runs down through the steering column and I assure you that you will not like the installation procedure.  Tie a small diameter wire (highest strength you can find) to the old cable before you remove it.  That should you install the new one.

You will have to look for the cable end yourself.  I have no idea where it connects on your truck.

Good luck.
