GM-GMC: automatic transmission, chevy 4x4, auto tranny

Question
1993 chevy 4x4 5.7ltr auto tranny.......My tranny is starting to slip catching and releasing. when I pulled the dip stick I found sludge on the end of the stick. Is it possible that the slipping is caused by a clogged filter? It usually does not slip as bad at low speeds as it does in higher speeds. Should I drop the pan and change the filter before proceeding and further as far as getting it to a shop?

Answer
Chris,

Yes, you can try the filter change.  Transmissions sometimes go into "fluid shock" after such a process and you may find the problem to be even worse.

In other words, have a friend available to rescue you if your vehicle becomes immobilized after changing the fluid/filter and you drive it for the first time.
