GM-GMC: gmc 6.2 wont start, plastic screws, quarter tank

Question
Hi the other day I was driving my vandurra which has a 6.2 1993 diesel. It just quit out of no where. I towed it home added gas, thought it might have ran out of fuel although tank regulator stated quarter tank. Since then I have tried in vain to start it and I get nothing.
How do I test to see if it is getting fuel? The glow plug light shows they are working.

Thanks Bill Myers

Answer
Bill,

You can check the fuel supply at the fuel filter, which should be on the back of the intake manifold.  You will first have to remove the engine cover inside the van.

If you did run out of fuel, what follows will not help.  The fuel system will have to be bled and that requires several steps best left to somebody familiar with the engine.

The filter should have two plastic screws that look like a "+" sign.  The top one is the air bleed.  Open it and try to crank the engine.  Fuel should flow out in a steady stream.  If not, try replacing the filter.  If a new filter does not help, your lift (fuel transfer pump) may not be working.
