GM-GMC: Windshield moulding, external moulding, poor shape

Question
Hi,

I have a 1995 G series van.  The moulding on the outside of my windshield is curling up out of the corners, is very dry and shrunk.  I have purchased the new mouldings but when I called to see about having them put in I was told the windshield needs to be removed and will probably break, costing an additional $200.00.  Does the windshield need removed to replace this moulding?  Just by looking at it, it looks as if you can remove the old adhesive, fill the channel with adhesive, and fit it in there.

Answer
Your solution might work, but I doubt that any glass company would try it.  They won't take the responsibility for the repair unless they do it their way.  It is not worth their time to rework a problem.  The other issue is that the rest of the windshield sealant may be in poor shape and that might create a path for water to get in if just the external moulding is replaced.

You might wish to try it yourself to save the cost of a new windshield.
