GM-GMC: starting a starter that no longer gets power, starter solenoid, oil gauge

Question
problems starting89 dsl v8 379 3/4 ton truck;i had to replace the clutch and slave cylinder and starter i also added 2 batteries.when every thing was on i attempted to start it and the motor turned over fine but no dice.so i gave it a rest and then tried it again; just to see the oil gauge jump up and a low clicking sound.with the starter nonresponsive.yet in the process of checking the fuel filter the extend a mirror cought contact with two wires coming off of what appered to be a coil switch and or starter switch. I am lost as to what to replace next since the fuses and relays check out good. anyhow thanks for any help.

Answer
You will have to be more specific about the wires that your mirror snagged.

The fuel filter is on the firewall and wiring to it consists of the water in fuel sensor, a pressure sensor, and a heater.  None of these devices will prevent the engine from cranking or the engine from starting.

Below the fuel filter, on the passenger side of the engine, is a two wire connector that goes to a sensor that controls the glow plug system on your truck.  If this connector is removed, the glow plugs will not energize.  The sensor is threaded into the cylinder head near the #8 cylinder glow plug (passenger side rear of the engine).

The starter solenoid is on top of the starter.  The wiring runs towards the radiator, so it is not likely that you snagged anything related to the starter with the mirror.
