GM-GMC: changing ignition cylinder, snap ring, two choices

Question
hi, I have a 1984 Silverado and I lost my key to the ignition.  I was contemplating getting a new key cut(if possible), but the price would probably be high as opposed to a new $10 cylinder and a DIY install.

anyways could you give me  any direction on this procdure of replacing the ignition cylinder, its column mounted btw.  Thanks for any help.

Answer
The steering wheel has to be removed, and then a plate (that is under a great deal of tension by a spring) has to be pushed down to remove a snap ring...and so on.

Your biggest problem is that the cylinder will not come out without the key.

You really only have two choices:  Replace the entire steering column or call a locksmith and have a new key made.
