GM-GMC: GM ignition, gm vehicles, chevy truck

Question
I recently tried to install a new ignition in my 88 chevy truck. I couldnt get any further than the lock plate becuase of a ring it looked like that held it back on the shaft.  How in the world do i get this off? why would they put somethin so hard to get off?

Answer
I am not certain about your question, but I believe that you are describing the top plate on the steering shaft (which is under the steering wheel).

GM vehicles have their steering systems tensioned by the plate, a spring, and a snap ring at the top of the column.  Why?  I don't know, except that they have been using this method for decades.

There is a tool that can be bought to help you with the task.  A knowledgeable auto parts person can help you find it.
